Netflix’s Korean dating reality show Single’s Inferno has often been a game-changer for contestants. The show has catapulted many to immense fame and even skyrocketed their social media following. While such unprecedented popularity is normal, one contestant from the latest season of the dating show has found himself at the centre of a controversy. It’s none other than Single’s Inferno 4’s Theo Jang.

Despite not being one of the most popular contestants on the show, his Instagram following has surged at an unmatched rate, which left many on the internet puzzled. According to SocialBlade, a social media analytics website, Theo’s statistics show huge fluctuations, with an eye-catching increase of over 28,000 new followers on both March 4 and 5. The sharp yet inconsistent increase in his follower count led online users to speculate that his rise to such fame might not be entirely organic.

A screenshot of Theo’s follower growth from the analytics website was shared on Reddit, which sparked a heated debate. Many on the social media platform accused the Single’s Inferno 4 star of buying followers.

One user said, “I might get downvoted, but I think his acting career is not going anywhere, so he might want to change to be an influencer. That’s why he went here and there to attract big brands and build his image also as an influencer followers number is important."

“I know people always say the participants go for fame/ career boost, but Theo is a different level of clout chaser. He had only one goal in mind going into the show (and no, it is not to get a girl like Sian)," added another.

“Everyone says he is the greenest flag. Seems like we’ve seen through him. I still stand by what I said. He was there to gain fame," wrote a different user.

Someone else shared, “I just checked the accounts of his recent followers, and you might be right. They all looked fake, with zero posts and suspicious profile pic. Although I’d like to give him the benefit of the doubt and think it’s his followers/fans buying for him."

In contrast, others questioned how he managed to surpass even the season’s most talked-about contestant, Lee Si An. She has about 9.8 lakh followers on Instagram, almost a lakh short of Theo’s. Notably, her growth appeared to be steady and natural, unlike her co-contestant’s rapid surge.
